Artistic residency at GRM/Radio France & with Les Métaboles

I have been invited to undertake an artistic residency at GRM / Radio France, in collaboration with the vocal ensemble Les Métaboles, in Paris, where I am developing a new work commissioned by Radio France for four voices and electronics entitled Spiramen. The piece is compoed for the radio program directed by Anne Montaron Création Mondiale (World Premiere).

This project focuses on the exploration of the interaction between voice and electronics, understood not as a simple layering of media, but as a field of mutual transformation. The compositional process investigates ways in which vocal material can be reshaped through electronic procedures, generating reciprocal influences between sound production, language, and perception.

Spiramen integrates sonic syntactic units, neologisms, and multilayered texts in multiple languages, including Maya and other Indigenous languages from the Americas, alongside materials in Spanish, French, English, Georgian, German, and Japanese. Rather than functioning as citation, these linguistic elements are treated as phonetic matter in transformation, where meaning emerges through resonance, timbre, and acoustic perception.

The work constructs an intercultural sonic space in which timbral experimentation, language fragmentation, and the exploration of the acoustic dimensions of voice converge. It aims to open a perceptual field in which meaning does not precede sound, but is generated through it.

The conceptual framework of the piece is inspired by the Mayan ritual of the Five Directions—the four cardinal points and the center—structured through symbolic associations between color, energy, nature, and spatial orientation. Elements such as wind, water, light, and the jaguar function as poetic vectors within the musical form.

This residency is supported by GRM / Radio France, a historic reference in electroacoustic research, and by Ensemble Les Métaboles, whose expertise in contemporary vocal performance is essential to the project. The work will be broadcast through Radio France’s Création Mondiale, ensuring international dissemination.

The residency takes place in Paris from June 4 to June 24.
