A new premiere will be performed by the Carlos Chávez Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Li-Sun Sung. It will take place next October 12 at the Blas Galindo Auditorium at the Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico City. The work is entitled Currentes and was written last year on commission from the orchestra and the Sistema Nacional de Fomento Musical del Messico.

The composer tells us about this new work: “In Currentes I transform a melody by means of techniques that allow an almost visible manipulation. The results of its metamorphoses therefore correspond to different space and time dimensions of this melody. Historically, Currentes, an alternative definition of conjunctura, which may be translated as “notes that run”, was one of the procedures used by the composers of the Notre Dame School to vary the rhythmical modes. The main effect of this procedure is that the original rhythmical model is broken with a series of fast notes, “running” so as to divide any rhythmical value, even very long ones. In my work, besides using this technique on the melody originally conceived as a sequence of notes, I use other procedures to add pitches, either vertically or horizontally, as for example observing the melodic sequences through an imaginary lens that gradually takes out of focus the original image, producing asynchronous “swelling” – rhythmically speaking – in the aforesaid melodic sequences”.
