Javier Torres Maldonado studies at the Conservatory of Mexico City and later, invited by Franco Donatoni, he studies composition with S. Gorli and A. Solbiati at the Conservatoire "G. Verdi" of Milan. He completes with honours his postgraduate studies under the guidance of Donatoni ("L. Perosi" International Accademy, Accademia Chigiana of Siena, Italy), Azio Corghi (Santa Cecilia's Accademy of Rome) and Ivan Fedele (Conservatory of Strasbourg, France.) In 2003, he earned a diploma from the Conservatory of Milan for his work in electro-acoustic music, and in 2004 he assisted to the Stage de Composition et Informatique Musicale at IRCAM in Paris.
He has received an international array of honors including the Commande d'Etat by the French Ministry of Culture (two times: 2008 and 2006), First Prize at the International Composition Competition for works for acoustic instruments and intercative electro-acoustic system of GRAME (Centre National de Creation Musicale of Lyons, France), First Prize at the “Queen Elisabeth” International Composition Competition of Brussels (2004), First Prize at the International Composition Competition “A. Casella” of Siena, Italy (2001), First Prize at the Queen Maria Jose" of Geneva (2000); First Prize, International Composition Competition “Ad Referendum II" (1997), Montreal, Canada; First Prize, International Composition Competition “Città di Barletta" (1997), Italy, “Prix des Musiciens”; for two consecutive times (1999 and 2001), Second Prize at the International Composition Competition “Mozart” of Salzburg, Austria, among others.
He has received numerous commissions for large ensembles, symphonic, chamber, solo and vocal music, with or without electronics, as well as electro-acoustic music alone from many internationally renowned festivals, institutions and performers around the world, like the Biennale of Venice, Klangspuren of Austria, Festival Internacional Cervantino (Mexico), “Musica” of Strasbourg, Milano Musica, Musiques en Scène of Lyons. His compositions are performed, among others, by Irvine Arditti, Armand Angster, Mario Caroli, Carlo Chiarappa, Pablo Marquez, Arditti Quartet, Ensemble 2e2m, Ensemble Aleph, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Divertimento Ensemble, National Orchestra of Belgium, La Fenice Opera Theater Symphony Orchestra of Venice, Symphony Orchestra of Bilbao.
From 2007 he beacame professor (full time) in Composition and New Technologies at the Conservatory of Milan; from 2003 to 2007 he held the same post at the Conservatory of Alessandria, Italy. Also, he was professor of Computer Assisted Composition in the Master courses at the Conservatory of Trento - Riva del Garda from 2006 to 2007.
For the second time he is a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (National Council for Culture and Arts of Mexico), 2009-2012. Among the projects for 2010 it would be mentioned a new piece for a multidisciplinary stage work “New rituals for a disperate era” in collaboration with the Navarrete x Kajiyama Dance Company that will be premiered in November at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts of San Francisco, U.S. A., a new piece for percussions, piano and electronics that will be premiered at the Opéra Nationale of Lyons, France, during the Journées GRAME 2011 and Festival Manca 2011 in Nice, the premiere in Germany of his String Quartet No. 1 by the Arditti Quartet, during the Witten Tage für Neue Musik (WDR in Cologne), and a monographic concert during the Festival Extension 2011 in Paris by the Ensemble 2e2m; the programme of the concert will be recorded in a new CD produced by La Muse en Circuit of France.
